Theodossia-Soula Pavlidou is Professor of Linguistics, in the Linguistics Department of the School of Philology, at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), Greece. She got her B.A. (major in Physics) in the U.S. and her PhD (Kommunikationsforschung) in Germany, where she first got involved in the women’s movement and women’s studies activities.
She has been a member of the Women’s Studies Group at AUTh, from its beginning (1983) to its end a few years ago, and has been engaged in numerous efforts to establish some form of Gender Studies at the same university. Her participation in ATHENA, more specifically in the Travelling Concepts working group, helped overcome some of the accumulated frustration. As of recently --thanks to the EU--several projects on ‘Issues of Gender and Equality’ have been made possible in Greece. Among them, the Interdepartmental Undergraduate Studies Program on Issues of Gender and Equality at AUTh, which she is (co-)coordinating together with other colleagues.
Soula’s research interests lie in the intersection of linguistic pragmatics and sociolinguistics, including of course the relationship between language and gender (see publications below). Her courses move along similar lines, but have been augmented in the last three years with an introductory course on gender studies, as a consequence of the above mentioned interdepartmental program.
She is currently in charge of a research project on language and gender.
